March 16, 2014 (Kampala) - Kenyan athletes have hauled in more medals than any other participant during Sunday’s Africa Cross Country Championships at the Kololo Grounds in Kampala. However, among the long list of Kenyans one young Eritrean who lead his team to silver medal stood out.
The junior men’s race was won by Moses Mukono in 22:36.80 followed by fellow countrymen Andrew Lorot in 22:50.19 and Berhane Afewerki from Eritrea who finished 3rd place in 22:56.45.
Mukono, who failed to impress at the 2013 World Cross in Poland said, “I won this race so easily. I slowed the pace but when I realized the opposition were not so strong, I fired away. I now prepare for the IAAF World Junior Athletics Championships in Oregon. I will also try if I can manage the team to Commonwealth Games in Glasgow, Scotland.”
The big surprise, however, was Eritrean Berhane Afewerki and his third place finish, which is a huge success for the young athlete and the Eritrean team lined up on the starting line in Kampala taking home the silver medal in the team qualification.
In February Afewerki Berhane qualified for the African Cross Country Championship during the Eritrean National Cross Country Championships.
He led every step of the way during the Junior Men’s 8K race in Eritrea and finished ahead of fellow countrymen Berhane Amanuel and Habtom Weldu.
With his 3rd place in Kampala Aferwerki Berhane has become one of Eritrea’s new Cross Country hopefuls.
