President Omar Al-Beshir Conducts Working Visit in Eritrea


Shabait, Asmara, 17 February 2011 – The President of Sudan, Field Marshal Omar Hassan Al-Beshir conducted a one-day working visit in Eritrea. President Isaias Afwerki accorded him official welcome on arrival at the Asmara International Airport.

In a meeting at the State Palace, the two leaders held discussion focusing on bilateral relations, enhancing mutual cooperation and regional as well as international issues of mutual interest.

In briefings they gave to local and international media outlets following the meeting, Presidents Isaias and Omar Al-Beshir pointed out that their discussion was a continuation of the regular consultations and exchanging of views between the two countries and leaders.

Noting the historical Eritrean-Sudanese ties, President Omar Al-Beshir elaborated that the two leaders reached understanding to deepen the long-standing bilateral relations and cooperation, in addition to conducting exchange of views on the objective situation and developments in the region in general and Sudan in particular.

The Sudanese President further explained that in view of the exemplary relations between Eritrea and Sudan, both leaders exchanged information regarding the very sensitive stage Sudan is currently undergoing and other regional issues. President Omar Al-Beshir also indicated that the two leaders reached understanding on the need for joint work programs.

President Isaias on his part underlined that though there exists mutual political will on both sides to reinforce bilateral cooperation in line with the prevailing Eritrea-Sudanese strategic ties, the work accomplished over the past five years is not that satisfactory. Such effort should be stepped up in the future, he added.

President Omar Al-Beshir left for home in the afternoon hours concluding his working visit.

Egyptian-Eritrean Summit In Sharm to Boost Bilateral Ties


An Egyptian-Eritrean summit was held in Sharm el-Sheikh Tuesday May 4, 2010 between President Hosni Mubarak and Eritrean President Isaias Afwerki, according to ESIS.

During the summit, the two leaders discussed a number of regional and international issues of common interest topped by relations between Egypt and the Nile Basin states based on mutual understanding and joint keenness to achieve balanced development in all Nile Basin states.

The summit tackled the results of the underway consultations with all Nile basin states in the light of messages which have been addressed by President Mubarak to the leaders of those countries in the wake of the ministerial meeting of the Nile Basin states which was held in Sharm el-Sheikh last month.

Talks between the two leaders focused on the situation in the horn of Africa and efforts to combat piracy in Somalia.

Furthermore, Mubarak and Afewrki reviewed ways of boosting bilateral relations in the political, economic and social fields, expanding trade and investment exchange as well as encouraging the establishment of joint projects for enhancing development plans.

The Eritrean President arrived in Sharm el-Sheikh on a three-day visit and was welcomed at the airport by Foreign Minister Ahmed Abul-Gheit, Minister Omar Suleiman, South Sinai Governor Mohamed Abdel-Fadil Shousha and the Eritrean Ambassador in Cairo.

Following the summit talks, the Eritrean President left Sharm el-Sheikh for Cairo for talks with Prime Minister Ahmed Nazif on expanding the scope of cooperation, the exchange of expertise and developing relations in the various domains.

Eritrean FM Discusses Bilateral Ties with Omani Counterpart


MUSCAT | According to news reports from Oman, Yousuf bin Alawi bin Abdullah, Omani minister responsible for foreign affairs, received in his office yesterday Osman Saleh, Eritrean foreign minister who is on an official visit to the Sultanate.

The meeting discussed relations between the countries in various fields and ways of taking it to higher level, besides exchanging views on international and regional issues of common interest.

The meeting was also attended by Ahmed bin Yousef Al Harthy, undersecretary of the Ministry for Diplomatic Affairs; Khadeeja bint Hassan Al Lawatiyah, head of the Minister’s Office Department; Waheed bin Ali Al Kharousi, head of East Africa’s Department and the acting head of the West, South and Middle Africa Department, officials at the Foreign Ministry and the delegation accompanying the minister.

Alawi also received in his office here yesterday Stuart Levey, undersecretary of the US Treasury Department, who is currently on an official visit to the Sultanate.

The meeting discussed bilateral relations. The meeting was attended by Mohammed bin Ali Al Khusaibi, head of Northern America’s Department; Khadeeja bint Hassan Al Lawatiyah, head of the Minister’s Office Department; Dr Richard J. Schmierer, US ambassador to the Sultanate and officials at the Foreign Ministry.

Alawi has received an invitation from Yang Jiechi, minister of foreign affairs of China, to take part in the fourth session of the ministerial meeting of the Chinese-Arab Cooperation Forum.

The message was handed over by Pan Weifang, Chinese ambassador to the Sultanate, when Alawi received him in his office here yesterday.

The meeting discussed relations between the two countries in various fields.
