How Does Eritrean Food Come Across?

jebena

I am definitely not claiming to be an expert after four hours at a one year old’s birthday, but it was fascinating to see, taste and feel some of the culture of Eritrea yesterday.

Food?: in one word, spicy. Rather spicy. And for poor me, who cannot handle any chilli, I was glad to have a glass of water nearby.

But it was beautiful. Stews & curries, made from lentils and other vegetables, placed on top of the deliciouis Eritrean bread, Injera. There were also rice dishes and some absolutely scrumptious chicken. Mmm.

Greeting each other appears also very important: as someone walked in they went around and either shaked-hands, kissed-on-the-cheek, or did something which involved touching shoulders, with everyone. It was also clear that pride in appearance plays a large part: no shorts and t-shirts here! The ladies were wonderfully dressed in either smart suits or bright, traditional clothing.

Another lovely thing was the bringing around of roasted coffee beans to smell: the person waved the pot in front on you and you waved your hands over it and towards your face to take in the smell. And as someone who loves, nay adores!, the smell of fresh roasted coffee beans, it was a beautiful smell indeed. And I was told the reason for doing this was simply that it is a pleasing smell and a welcoming one.

When it came time for the birthday cake, all manner of food and drink, including a traditional Eritrean cake [a very large circular piece of bread], were placed on the table with the birthday cake, as a sign and wish for blessing [may he have all] in the young fellow’s life.

Many, many years to young Abraham! And my sincerest thanks to my colleague, Rissom, and his wife and mother, for letting me share in this special day. Source: (Exploring Orthodoxy)

Hidden Spot - Travel Eritrea

Eritrea is quiet a hidden spot for travel in Africa and underestimated in its tourism potential. The country offers many facets of geographical and cultural aspects.

From the impressive Italian style art deco capital Asmara in the highlands to the oriental read sea town of Massawa on the read sea. Recently, in the Articlesbase Online travel section a visitor explains what to do in Eritrea for holiday.

The country is populated by 13 different ethnic groups, which give Eritrea a unique touch of richness in diverstiy. Efforts have been stepped up to promote Eritrea as a tourism destination by the Eritrean government in order to earn mostly needed hard currency. Since a few years Eritrea is represented at the International Tourism Fair in Berlin ITB as reported earlier by capitaleritrea.

However, the development of a tourism industry is hampered by the ongoing conflict with neighboring Ethiopia and the risk of new wars erupting between both countries.

Moreover, the region has been in recent years in bad publicity, due to instability and war in Somalia, Darfur in Sudan, and the military presence of western nations in Djibouti. Eritrea will therefore most probably remain a hidden spot known only to the Eritrean Diaspora and their friends.

eritrean-airlines1

Eritrean Airlines

Frankfurt, Germany: From the start of the summer time table 2009 (29.03.2009) Eritrean Airlines will cease its operation for flights from Asmara to Frankfurt.

This was announced in a press release of Frankfurt Airport (FRAPORT). Eritrean Airlines used to serve the route for many years and Eritreans used to travel with the national carrier to visit relatives back home in Eritrea.

The peak travel period from Frankfurt was during the summer holidays from June until September, when Eritrean Airlines and Lufthansa could fill their flights and the market was big enough for two airlines. Why Eritrean Airlines has decided to stop flying is not clear yet. Lufthansa will now have a monopoly on Frankfurt-Asmara serving the market three times a week flights to Asmara via Jeddah in Saudi Arabia.

Eritrea in the Second World War

One of the historic battles fought by the British RAF (Royal Air Force) in East Africa during the Second World War was the campaign against the Italian invasion of British Somalia. One of the first phases of the battle was in Agordat. It is said that the British pushed deep into Eritrea coming from Egypt through Sudan. The Italians were initially forced to surrender when allied forces attacked Keren. However, the final blow was delivered to the Italians when the allies flew airstrikes against Asmara and Massawa resulting in the end of the Italian resistance in 1941. The historic events are described in the book “Air War East Africa 1940-1941”, which outlines how the British forces succeeded with a small army and out dated equipment.
