Chalice Signs Agreements on Two Major New Exploration Licences in Eritrea

Chalice Gold Mines Limited (ASX: CHN) has announced that the Company’s 100% owned subsidiary, Keren Mining Pty Ltd has signed agreements with the Eritrean Ministry of Energy and Mines for two new Exploration Licences totalling 830 sq km in northern Eritrea.

The new licences, Mogoraib North and Hurum, add significantly to the Company’s exploration tenure in two highly prospective geological terrains. Intensive exploration programs are planned for the first 12 months of tenure, with an initial budget exceeding US$1 million.

Mogoraib North EL

The 555 sq km Mogoraib North licence lies approximately 10 kilometres north of the world class Bisha polymetallic Volcanic-hosted Massive Sulphide (VHMS) deposit owned by Nevsun Resources Ltd. (TSX:NSU)(AMEX:NSU) (60%) and the Eritrean National Mining Corporation (ENAMCO) (40%) which commenced production in early January this year.

The volcano-sedimentary rocks hosting the Bisha deposit extend northwards beneath the Mogoraib North EL although much of the basement geology is masked by recent alluvial cover. A regional interpretation of Landsat imagery conducted by Chalice in 2009 identified several ‘islands’ of exposed bedrock within these later sediments with Bisha-like spectral signatures and the licence was lodged to cover these anomalies.

Chalice is planning to undertake an initial exploration program involving acquisition and interpretation of further satellite imagery, geological mapping, geochemical sampling and an airborne EM survey using the VTEM system.

Hurum EL

The 275 sq km Hurum licence lies adjacent to and south west of the Company’s Zara South licence.

The property straddles the Elababu Shear Zone, a major regional structure that controls much of the known gold mineralization in northern Eritrea, including the Company’s flagship Koka Gold Deposit (Indicated Resource of 5Mt grading 5.3 g/t) which lies ~40 kilometres to the north east .

Chalice is planning to undertake an initial exploration program involving acquisition and interpretation of satellite imagery, geological mapping, geochemical sampling and an airborne magnetic and radiometric survey.

Zara North and Zara South Licences

Chalice also wishes to advise it has signed agreements for the conversion of the 115 sq km Zara North and 350 sq km Zara South Prospecting Licences to Exploration Licences. These licences lie adjacent to and along strike from the Koka Gold Deposit and are currently the focus of intensive exploration programs (refer to the announcement of 20 December 2010 for further details).

Zara Project Update- ENAMCO Paid Participating Interest

Chalice Gold Mines Limited (ASX: CHN) (“Chalice”) announced today that in an important step towards finalisation of a Mining Agreement for the Koka Gold Project, the Eritrean Government has advised its intention to purchase, at fair value, a 30% paid participating interest in the project through the Eritrean National Mining Corporation (ENAMCO). This paid participating interest is in addition to ENAMCO’s 10% carried interest.

The method and timing of the valuation to determine the fair value of the paid participating interest is being discussed with ENAMCO, however, it is expected to follow the precedent set by the Bisha project, held 60% by Nevsun Resources Ltd (TSX:NSU)(AMEX:NSU) and 40% by ENAMCO. In the event the Company and ENAMCO are unable to agree the fair value, a mutually acceptable independent valuer will be appointed to determine the fair value.

ENAMCO will also be required to contribute its proportionate share of project development and capital expenditure. Finalising the terms on which ENAMCO will acquire the 30% interest in the project will greatly assist Chalice’s efforts to secure the necessary approvals to develop Koka and is a strong vote of confidence in the project by the Eritrean Government. Chalice Executive Chairman Tim Goyder said the Company welcomed ENAMCO’s decision to be a significant partner in Koka and Chalice looked forward to the benefits that the arrangement would generate.

“This agreement will allow Chalice and ENAMCO to move rapidly towards finalisation of the agreements covering the project and the granting of a Mining Licence.” Mr Goyder said. “ENAMCO’s involvement will also play a significant role in enabling the project to secure funding and in the process reduce Chalice’s funding requirements.”

Koka Closer to Production with Completion of Social and Environmental Impact Reports

Chalice Gold Mines Limited (ASX: CHN) advises that it has taken a major step towards production at its Zara Gold Project in Eritrea with the completion of the Social & Environmental Impact Assessment (SEIA) and Social & Environmental Management Plan (SEMP) for the 840,000oz Koka Deposit at Zara.

The SEIA and SEMP have been lodged with the Eritrean Ministry of Energy & Mines. These reports form a key component of the documentation required to secure a mining licence for the Koka deposit. They represent the culmination of two and half years of environmental, socio-economic and community studies.

The studies were conducted by independent consultants Knight Piésold and Global Resources Development and Management Consultants (GREDMCO) in line with internationally accepted standards.

Chalice will press ahead with planning for the development of the Koka mine, with first production scheduled for early 2013. Koka is forecast to produce at an average annual rate of 104,000 ounces at a cash cost of US$338/oz.

About the Zara Gold Project

The Zara Project comprises four Exploration Licences and two Prospecting Licences (the latter currently undergoing conversion to EL’s) covering an area of 615km2 situated in northern Eritrea, approximately 160km northwest of Asmara city. Chalice holds a 100% interest in the project subject to government participation rights.

The Koka Gold Deposit within the project contains a Probable Reserve of 4.6 million tonnes of ore grading 5.1 grams of gold per tonne and containing 760,000 oz of gold. Beware Fool’s Gold During the Bullion Stampede

SHORT of an outbreak of world peace, can anything halt the march of bullion?

Spot gold hit a record $US1268/oz yesterday, if only because of $US weakness.

Combine this price strength with the local consolidation activity and there’s no wonder there’s a surge of interest in the sector. But investors shouldn’t assume every two-bit play is a takeover target.

Nor should they resort to sector big-daddy Newcrest Mining (NCM, $39.50) as the default gold-price exposure. As Citi notes, Newcrest’s 3.1 million oz production (post Lihir merger) eclipses that of other stocks. Citi compares Newcrest to Westfield, which dwarfs the property trust sector. Far from being a reliable outperformer, Westfield has had long spells of underperformance.

“We see the potential for the same situation to occur in the gold sector,” Citi says. “Newcrest is clearly the most liquid company with the premium asset base.

“However, given its size there is unlikely to be M&A potential and its large production base means operational matters (better grade, lower cost and more volume) are unlikely to significantly change the direction of the company.”

So what stocks are better leveraged to the gold price? Take your pick (or shovel). Last week, we mentioned Medusa Mining (MML, $4.85), which is producing at its Philippines Co-O mine.

Since then, Criterion’s in-box has bulged with more suggestions from the gold bugs. One is Dampier Gold (DAU, 58c), which is on the path to production at its Plutonic Dome project in WA.

Dampier has struck a “framework agreement” deal with its neighbour and cornerstone investor Barrick Gold to process ore at Barrick’s Plutonic mine. Dampier has a modest resource of 290,000oz, but can be boosted with further drilling.

In terms of existing producers, there’s been solicitous eyes cast at the reliable Kingsgate Consolidated (KCN, $11.41), which is producing at the rate of 130,000oz from its Chatree mine in Thailand.

Then there’s CGA Mining (CGX, $2.64), which owns Masbate, The Philippines’ biggest gold project about 350km from Manila.

CGA yesterday duly reported the archipelago’s lofty ascent in the Fraser Institute’s updated annual survey, which ranks nations and states according to their desirability for miners.

The Philippines’ ranking improved to 35th from 49th previously — not far behind Australia which plummeted from 18 to 31, courtesy of the mining tax.

Masbate, which poured its first gold in May last year, has probable reserves of 3.03 million oz and is pitched at being a 200,000oz operator (having produced 150,000oz in 2009-10.

In other news, Southern Cross Equities won’t be fazed about incurring a 6.6 million shortfall of Chalice Gold (CHN) shares, the result of underwriting its rights raising to develop the 840,000oz Koka project in Eritrea.

The one-for-six offer was priced at 42c, compared with last night’s close of 62c. A further guide to Chalice’s potential is that management has also ditched a proposed broader Eritrean JV with heavyweight Newmont Mining, arguing its holders would fare better on a go-it-alone basis.

Amid all this lustrous intrigue, we rate the Toronto and locally listed CGA as a speculative buy, as is the case with Chalice and Dampier (Wilson HTM values the stock at 79c). Newcrest is a sell: the stock always gets the wobbles at the $40 mark. We’ll also take profits on Kingsgate, which we had as a spec buy at $8.60 in May.

Axa Asia Pacific (AXA) $5.19

WE can’t accuse Axa’s ad gurus of being flat-footed, yesterday rushing out poster ads proclaiming its North platform as “the one investment offer so hot the ACCC didn’t want a bank to NAB it”.

Perhaps too much of an in-joke for harried commuters, but a cheeky take on the competition regulator’s concerns which resulted in National Australia Bank dropping its Axa bid on Tuesday.

The sub-text of Axa’s ad blitz is that it’s business as usual — but that’s not what the market is punting on given Axa shares closed mirror-flat yesterday.

But don’t assume anything will happen in a hurry: likely suspect AMP is disciplined on acquisitions, French parent Axa SA is patient, while the reluctant local Axa board said no to four buyout attempts (including Axa SA’s earlier efforts) before endorsing NAB’s tilt.

It’s a reasonable punt something will happen — eventually. But forget the notion of AMP returning with something less than its previous $5.40 share-scrip effort. However, an offer above $6 a share, we can see the Axa board’s resolve melting (if only because everyone’s heartily sick of the whole thing).

Criterion last week had Axa as a speculative buy at $5.08 and maintain the call. But investors need to be patient and disciplined.

Chalice Gold Will Not Proceed with Newmont Joint Venture

Chalice Gold Mines Limited (ASX: CHN) advises that it has informed Newmont Mining Corporation that Chalice will not proceed with a planned regional joint venture agreement in Eritrea.

The proposed JV, which was outlined in an ASX announcement on July 23, 2010, remained subject to formal documentation, which has not been completed.

Following the current fully underwritten rights issue Chalice will have cash of ~$16 million and therefore the Board has decided it would be in shareholder’s best interests if Chalice explored the highly prospective tenements in its own right. The tenements are currently under application.

Under a joint venture agreement, Newmont would have funded an initial $1-million reconnaissance exploration programme, after which both parties would have selected areas to be retained in the venture.

Newmont would have been the majority shareholder of the new joint venture with 75% ownership and Chalice ownership would have fallen to 25%.

Chalice Gold Mines Quarterly Report

Chalice Gold Mines Limited (ASX: CHN) made substantial progress in the March quarter towards its goal of becoming a significant African gold producer based on its rapidly advancing Zara Project in Eritrea.

Chalice Gold Mines: Drilling Results Confirm High Grade Koka Gold Deposit in Eritrea

East African-focused company Chalice Gold Mines Limited (ASX:CHN), developing the high grade 1 million ounce Zara Project in Eritrea, advises that new results from infill drilling at the Koka Gold Deposit continue to confirm the high grade nature of the ore body.

The results, which will form part of the final resource estimate for the Koka feasibility study, include:

6 metres grading 12.37 grams of gold per tonne in ZARD 135;
5 metres grading 21.90 grams of gold per tonne in ZARD 135;
10 metres grading 9.97 grams of gold per tonne in ZARD 136;
4 metres grading 32.76 grams of gold per tonne in ZARD 137;
2 metres grading 10.58 grams of gold per tonne in ZARD 139, and;
9 metres grading 4.68 grams gold per tonne in ZARD 141.

The new results come from diamond drill holes ZARD 135 through to 144 (results from ZARD 143 pending) which achieved significant intersections of quartz stockwork mineralisation within the Koka Main Zone.

A complete tabulation of results is provided in Table 1.

Assays have now been received from 15 holes of the 31-hole, ~5,000 metre infill diamond drilling program (Figure 2). Results received to date are consistent with previous drilling that indicated a decline in quartz stockwork development and gold grades at around 150 metres depth (Figure 3).

All 31 holes have now been completed with the last five holes currently being logged prior to processing through the sample preparation facility in Asmara and transport to Genalysis Laboratories in Perth, Western Australia for analysis. Further assay results will be released to the market as they become available.

Following completion of the infill drilling program, one of the drill rigs has moved to the Koka East Zone, which lies 80-100 metres into the hangingwall of Koka Main Zone. Planning for drilling of the Koka South Zone is in progress. In the meantime one of the rigs will be employed on tailings dam foundation testing.

Four geotechnical holes have also been completed which will provide data on ground conditions in the pit highwall that will potentially allow a redesign of the pit to a lower strip ratio.

Koka, which is the flagship deposit at Chalice’s 80 per cent-owned Zara Project, has JORC compliant Indicated and Inferred resources of 944,000 ounces.

Chalice Gold Mines Entitled to A$5 Million Following Merger with Sub-Sahara Resources

Chalice Gold Mines Limited (ASX:CHN) advises that following its merger with Sub-Sahara Resources NL (“Sub-Sahara”), it became entitled to a payment of A$5 million upon commercial production at the Nyanzaga Project in Tanzania.

The Nyanzaga Project, which hosts the Tusker Gold Project, is currently owned 49% by Tusker Gold Limited (ASX:TKA) and 51% by Barrick Gold Corporation (“Barrick”) following Sub-Sahara’s sale of its interest in the project to Indago Resources Limited (ASX:IDG) (“Indago”) in February 2009. Barrick has announced a takeover bid for Tusker.

As advised to ASX by Indago on 8 February 2010, Indago has entered into a Pre-bid Acceptance Agreement with Barrick in respect of 17.5 million Tusker shares it owns and has notified that it intends to accept the Barrick bid for its remaining 50 million shares.

Should the Barrick takeover of Tusker be successful, Barrick will own 100% of the Nyanzaga Project. Chalice sees this as a positive transaction which may expedite the development of the Nyanzaga Project and hence receipt by Chalice of the A$5 million deferred consideration

Chalice Gold Mines has projects in Eritrea and Australia. In 2009 the merger with Sub-Sahara Resources gave Chalice a 80% stake in the Zara Gold Project in Eritrea.

At the end of 2009 Chalice subscribed for 1.6M shares in London Africa at 12.5p per share for GBP200,000 (A$358,000) which will gave Chalice an 11.8% interest in the Company. London Africa Limited signed in June 2009 a prospecting licence to cover 1562 km² around Akordat – Orota in central Eritrea.

Chalice Gold Announces Further Results From Koka Drilling

East African-focused company Chalice Gold Mines (ASX: CHN) has advised that further results from infill drilling at its Koka Gold Deposit in Eritrea continue to confirm the robust nature of the ore body.

Following the announcement, shares in the company rose 3.4%, or 1.5c, to 45.5c during the afternoon trade.

The new results come from diamond drill holes ZARD 129, 130, 131, 132 and 134 which all achieved significant intersections of quartz stockwork mineralisation within the Koka Main Zone.

The better intersections included 8 metres grading 9.47 grams of gold per tonne in ZARD 129; 6 metres grading 26.92 grams of gold per tonne in ZARD 130; 11 metres grading 4.68 grams of gold per tonne in ZARD 131; 18 metres grading 29.30 grams of gold per tonne in ZARD 132, and 11 metres grading 8.29 grams of gold per tonne in ZARD 134.

The results from infill drilling continue to confirm the continuity and high grade nature at the rich Koka Gold Deposit at the Zara Project in Eritrea.

Close to 80% of infill drilling program now completed with further assays pending, with a geotechnical drilling program about to commence.

The company has reported that follow-on drill programs at Koka East and Koka South underway.
